Ten games decide the whole season

Placement matches set where your rank starts, and starting two divisions low means climbing back through them with the same account MMR that put you there. That is why this service exists and why it spikes the week a season resets: ten games played well is worth far more in February than the same ten games in June.

What actually decides where you land

Your hidden MMR from last season, mostly, and then the ten games. Nobody can place a Bronze account into Diamond and anybody promising that is describing a different account. What a good set of placements does is land you at the top of what your MMR allows instead of the bottom, which is usually a division or two.
